The symphony originated in 1956 with help of small instrumental ensembles.
Morine Nyquist conducted rehearsals with what was then known as the Huron
College-Community Orchestra. The fact that Huron had an orchestra attracted
James Paterson Jr. to join the Huron College faculty. As conductor, he increased
the number of players by adding advanced young musicians and several
professionals. By 1962 the orchestra was known as the Huron Symphony. Today we
are proud to call it the Huron Symphony Orchestra.
Huron is the only community in South Dakota that maintains a symphony without
the support of a university thanks to your help. Our organization depends almost
entirely on the contributions of our patrons and sponsoring businesses for
much-appreciated financial assistance for the purchase and/or rental of music,
importing some musicians, mileage, rental expense, advertising, and our
conductor’s salary.
The Huron
Symphony Orchestra’s 51st year will include:
All four concerts will be held in the Auditorium at Huron High School at 4:00 pm.
Individual tickets are $10.00 each. That makes a total of $40.00 if you buy a
ticket at each concert. In order to honor our guests, we are offering season
memberships this year for only $35. Our young friends 18 and under are
encouraged and invited to attend free of charge.
In order to sustain our fine Huron Symphony Orchestra, we humbly ask you to make
an additional TAX-DEDUCTIBLE contribution to cover the ever-increasing cost of
providing this quality cultural entertainment to the residents of Huron and the
surrounding communities. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to First United Methodist
Church for allowing us to use their fine facility and especially to YOU for
making another season of great music possible. Please download and print the
